First came boobs, then came marriage, then came baby in the baby carriage. Then came cancer. Who knew that having cancer would be so reminiscent of being pregnant? Booby Trap provides this wacky perspective in order to help patients laugh through their dark days and to give caregivers the tools to try to understand. The heightened sense of smell, the nausea, the food restrictions, and the need for a new wardrobe are just some of the strange ways that these two situations are the same. This book chronicles the author’s first-hand knowledge of both cancer and parenthood and leans on the common experiences of pregnancy and motherhood to illustrate what undergoing cancer treatment is really like.

Allison has captured the breast cancer experience perfectly, sharing all facets with an abiding sense of humor. She includes the little stuff that no one bothered to prepare us for as well as the frustration, exhaustion, hilarious moments, and the sense of loss felt even by those of us who never thought much about our breasts before. The comparison to pregnancy that I thought would have to be forced for the sake of humor actually reveals a lot about the effect this disease can have on our relationships and daily lives. Give this to anyone you know who's going through the pink experience: it will provide information, support, chuckles, and assurance that whatever she is experiencing is normal. Get it for caregivers, too, because there's stuff in here that they need to understand but their loved one might never tell them about. Every breast center should have copies of this book on hand. Really.Product details

Booby Trap Breast cancer is just like pregnancy only different Allison Bially Erica Rimlinger 9780988628809 Books Reviews
Once I started this book I couldn't put it down. Allison's storytelling is very engaging. She tells the story of breast cancer treatment as it relates to something many of us understand - pregnancy. I laughed and cried while reading this book and immediately wanted to share it with others. I am ordering two more copies to share with friends who have experienced both pregnancy and breast cancer treatment. If you have a friend or relative who had or is going through breast cancer treatment I highly recommend this book.
Even without having experienced breast cancer and its treatment, I enjoyed this book and learned from it. Allison's writing is very down-to-earth and real. Nothing is sugar-coated, yet she is able to tell it all with humor. Her light touch makes the whole scary subject, if not less scary, then face-able. I think this will be a wonderful book to encourage anyone who has breast cancer (and perhaps those who are undergoing any type of cancer treatment). It also a great book for friends and family of cancer patients.
My neighbor gave me this book the day I got diagnosed with breast cancer. I tried to read it that day, but it was too hard to read. Now, four months later, as I start chemo, I devoured the whole book in a few days. I found the insights very helpful and Allison's perspective so positive and up lifting. Thank you so much for sharing your inspiring story Allison.
Have given this book to 3 young women close to me who are undergoing varying stages of breast cancer. They have all given me very positive feedback. I have a copy on my and reading Allison's story told with a wry sense of humor helps others to relate their experiences to hers. Pregnancy and breast cancer......a concept that all my female friends can identify with. Thank you Allison Bially!
Great book from a rookie writer. She writes about a painful subject with irony, amazing humor and compassion. You will laugh, cry and cheer!
I couldn't agree more with Ruth White.
Everyone's experience is different. That's a given. But to have had even a small amount of insight a few years back from a book like this...well.
This book was familiar and foreign at the same time. I laughed, cried and cried some more. It's real, authentic, and funny and should just be one of those books that everyone has to read if they want that insight as to how to be there, to be present in the lives of those around them who fight this fight.
First let me say that I have not had cancer. I have had family members with cancer and I never felt like I was doing the correct things to support them. Mostly I just didn't understand what was happening. I didn't know what the treatment was like, maybe I wasn't listening or maybe it wasn't talked about.
I have been pregnant. I do know what that is like.
This is a great book to talk about the scary things that people don't normally chat about. The book isn't depressing, it is real. I love the comparison to pregnancy because I finally feel like I got it. I feel like this book has given me so much knowledge!!! I feel like I would know how to give support in a way that would be useful. I had no idea that expanders would feel like sandbags, or that expanders even existed.
Thank you for all the knowledge!
